"Caring for Those Who Care for Others"
Hygge at Home
Contrary to what many believe, teachers don't sleep in their classroom cupboards and come out bright and bushy-tailed the next day!
It’s easy for people to forget that life exists for educators outside of school - we even forget ourselves at times!
But (forgive me for beginning a sentence with a conjunction!) we cannot pour from an empty cup and self-preservation isn’t something we should try to squeeze into our schedule. It’s vital to our own ability to thrive - both inside and outside of school.
One of our strengths as an educator, is our ability to care, deeply about what we do and the learning experience of the children we teach.
We need to make self-preservation a strength too.
Not because we should; but because it's our RIGHT.
Our Sanctuary: Reclaiming Your Space
Hygge at home is about preserving our energy and being fully present where it counts. It's about cooking with family and listening without our minds drifting back to tomorrow's classroom checklists .
It is found within our aesthetics we surround ourselves with - the warm glow of candles, soft lighting, and textured throws. It's what we do to create a dedicated space where we can exhale and leave the weight of the day behind.
If our settings can cultivate a culture of calm, we shouldn't need such a strong shield for protection; but it's essential that we devote time to ourselves and those we love - no questions asked, no guilt.
We need to learn to compartmentalise our workload, because if we don't, the people we live with; even if it is just ourselves, will never get the unhurried attention they truly deserve.
